Visiting Lewes

Where to stay in Lewes.

Lewes is small, but where you stay changes the feel of your visit. Here is our quick guide to the different parts of town.

On the High Street

Stay in the middle of things, with the castle, restaurants and shops on the doorstep. Best for a short break or a wedding in town.

  • The White Hart Hotel, the historic coaching inn where Tom Paine debated
  • Pelham House, a boutique hotel with gardens looking out to the Downs

By the station

Handy if you are arriving by train or heading to Glyndebourne, with a short walk up to the High Street.

  • Premier Inn Lewes Town Centre, in the old courthouse on Court Road

Southover

Quieter streets around the priory ruins and Anne of Cleves House, with B&Bs in old townhouses and two good pubs.

Cliffe

Across the bridge by the river and Harvey's Brewery, with independent shops, cafés and holiday lets.

Out in the villages

Farmhouse B&Bs, country pubs with rooms and holiday cottages in Ringmer, Glynde, Firle and Alfriston. Peaceful, but you will want a taxi for evenings out.
