Lewes to Gatwick: Taxi or Train?

Gatwick is close to Lewes, and the trains towards London Victoria stop there. So when is a taxi worth it? Here's our honest answer, from people who do the run every day.

When the train makes sense

  • You are travelling alone or as a couple with light bags
  • You live within walking distance of Lewes station
  • Your flight is in the middle of the day, so you're not trying to beat the first train

When a taxi makes more sense

  • Your flight leaves early and you need to be at Gatwick before the trains get going
  • There are three or four of you, so the fixed taxi fare is close to the cost of the tickets
  • You have big cases, children, car seats or someone who finds stairs and platforms difficult
  • You're coming from a village like Firle, Laughton or Alfriston, where getting to a station is a journey in itself
  • You are coming home late and tired, and want to step out of arrivals into a waiting car
